Arte – Mesopotamia 3D: The Future of Our Origins (2021)

Sumer, Babylon, the Epic of Gilgamesh, the legendary Tower of Babel: all these names embody Mesopotamia (literally "land between the rivers," namely the Tigris and the Euphrates). It was in this plain known as the Fertile Crescent, where present-day Iraq is located, that our civilization was born and where humanity organized itself into societies of tens of thousands of people, invented writing, and gave agriculture and architecture unprecedented development. What does this story tell us, that a terrorist group with global influence has decided, among other crimes, to want to permanently erase all traces of it?
In 2014, Mesopotamia was brought to our attention by the destructive madness of Daesh. The terrorist army was determined to erase all traces of this founding civilization. The main sites of Northern Mesopotamia were wiped off the archaeological map. The staged images of the atrocities traveled around the world and convinced Jawad Bashara, an Iraqi writer and journalist exiled in France under Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship, to return to his country and take action. He then began a race against the planned destruction of these founding pillars of our civilization. Adventurer archaeologists, students, children from cities and marshes, soldiers in combat, and guardians of sites lost in the middle of the desert joined him to save these treasures from yet another calamity. Using new technologies, Jawad Bashara hopes to digitally preserve and reconstruct the sites, monuments, and works scattered across conflict-ridden Iraq. Between mines and front lines, his expedition brings to life in its own way this civilization that, from its earliest village assemblies to the dizzying heights of its Tower of Babel, sought, at its own risk, to build a world that prioritized the union of men over the peace of the gods.
