BSkyB – Joe Cocker: Mad Dog with Soul (2017)
English | Documentary | Size: 2.11 GB
This feature-length documentary portrays the turbulent life and extraordinary talent of the late soul and blues singer Joe Cocker, with his unforgettably gritty voice and trademark spasmodic body movements. Cocker, who died in 2014, was a former gas fitter from Sheffield and catapulted to world stardom in 1969 at Woodstock with his legendary performance of "A Little Help From My Friends" – a song that, over the years, he really made his own. Originally broadcast on Sky Arts, and made with the co-operation of the late singer’s family, this film covers the life and career of Cocker in depth.
Cocker was relatively unknown when he took the stage of the Woodstock Music Festival, but he quickly rose to fame for his trademark onstage choreography and anguished blues singing. His album, "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" cemented his international stardom, and his subsequent 1970 tour of America is now seen as a milestone in rock history. However, as his stardom increased and the pressures mounted, Joe Cocker’s inner demons took him on a path of self-destruction that he was fortunate to survive. Though he was an Academy and Grammy Award winner, he suffered from low self-esteem and bouts of depression.
Through archive interviews with Cocker himself and contributions from his family, friends and the legendary songwriters and musicians he collaborated with alongside electric live performance footage from across his career, Mad Dog With Soul documents how Joe overcame his struggles with alcohol and drugs to rebuild his reputation as one of rock ‘n’ roll’s all-time great vocalists. Filled with surprising images, nutty stories, and electric performance footage throughout, the film mixes Cocker’s own words with stories told by his family, friends, and legendary collaborators.
Contributors include musicians Randy Newman, Billy Joel, Rita Coolidge, Jimmy Webb, Chris Stainton, Cliff Goodwin, Deric Dyer, former manager Michael Lang, producer Glyn Johns, friend and personal manager Ray Neapolitan, and Joe’s brother Vic and wife Pam also share their memories.
Produced and Directed by John Edginton ; An Otmoor Productions/Eagle Rock Entertainment Production with Sky Arts
