The books are as complete as they can possibly be, and will leave you lacking nothing in your study of a particular writer.
The cover will have a bust, portrait, or photograph of the author, depending of course on how recent a person we are dealing with. After a table of contents there will typically be photos of the author’s home town, home street, or birthplace; and throughout there will, where appropriate, be pictures of original playbills, theatres, paintings inspired by the works, etc.
Then come the texts, which, after being separated by genre for some authors, are presented chronologically, choosing the best translations, including ‘lost’ texts and perhaps even works of questionable attribution, and often accompanied by the artwork that appeared in the originals or in famous editions. In the case of ancient greek and roman authors there will then be copies of extant works in their original tongues. Nothing is left out.
After a full presentation of an author’s works, we will often find critical works from other famous people, and perhaps a biography or two. The book will then send off the writer with a picture or two of their gravesite or monument.
Each of these books is put together with complete attention to detail and is meant to satisfy the most ardent fan. And because most of the works dealt with have fallen into the public domain, the delphi editions are very cheap. Besides being the best editions ever created, they are also the best bargains in publishing history.
