English | Documentary | Size: 1.29 GB
Ancient Egypt, at the end of the Sixth Dynasty, on the royal burial site of Saqqara, four kings are "missing". Their graves have never been found…
Over the course of 3,000 years, more than 300 pharaohs ruled ancient Egypt, most leaving behind well-documented evidence of their existence. But one group of pharaohs – those from the period known as the Old Kingdom – haven’t left any archaeological trace of their rule. Now, follow world-renowned Egyptologist Vassil Dobrev as he tries to track down evidence of the most mysterious of these lost kings of Egypt: the pharaoh Pepi I.
Vassil Dobrev, a researcher and archaeologist at the IFAO, the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology in Cairo, is studying an unexplored area of the Saqqara site near Cairo in Egypt, in search of the lost tomb of King Userkare. During his excavations, he uncovers an alleyway lined with tombs where frescoes bring to life Hau-Nefer, high priest at the time of another pharaoh, Pepi I. According to Dobrev’s calculations, it is there, on the plateau of Tabbel El-Guesh, that the tomb of Userkare should be located. After a few weeks, the first clues are discovered, confirming the existence of a necropolis from the Old Kingdom.
The first discoveries, sarcophagi and skeletons from the Saite period (5th century BC), confirm his hypothesis. At that time, it was customary to place burials directly above the necropolises of the Old Kingdom. After several days of excavations, the team discovered a rectangular structure resembling a funeral shaft. The structure turned out to be the tomb of a dignitary of the Old Kingdom, Hau-Nefer, and his wife, Khuti.
But the discoveries did not stop there. As they explore the tomb, archaeologists realize that many inscriptions have been intentionally erased, and faces on hieroglyphs have been damaged, as if they wanted to make certain aspects of Hau-Nefer’s life disappear. Who was this mysterious priest? Solving the enigma may help find the missing pharaoh.
Using modern tools, he uncovers ancient tombs and artifacts, revealing family intrigues, political conspiracies and the quest for eternal life from 4,200 years ago. Despite significant finds, the search for Userkare’s tomb continues, highlighting the mystery surrounding this historical figure.
Unraveling the tale of a priest and his family by following the clues left to us by the ancients, Vassil Dobrev attempts to reconstruct the past in his quest for the lost pharaoh. Watch as we bring the ancient necropolis to life with modern CGI! 3D reconstruction sequences, integrated into the real sets filmed on the site, offer an original insight into one of the great mysteries of ancient Egypt.
