East Oaks Studio – Painting the Figure from Life with Mackenzie Swenson

Painting the figure from life is a time-honored practice in the western tradition of oil painting. Over the course of five days, Mackenzie will take you through her approach to this process. There will be one pose for the duration of the five days.

Day one begins with color study to establish the composition and large value/color relationships.
Block-in, involving drawing with raw umber paint and odorless spirits establishes a strong gesture, accurate likeness, and proportion with attention to anatomical points and shadow shapes.
The process continues with “window shading” or rendering one section at a time to completion before moving on to the next. Course topics include anatomy, light and form, comparative measuring, color theory, and specific painting techniques.

The course is incomplete, I’m missing the last day of the demo. Run time is 4 hours 13 minutes.

Mackenzie Swenson graduated from Grand Central Atelier and was an instructor there for some time, so this is a great opportunity to see the GCA approach to the human figure. Even though the course is incomplete, you get to see most of the process.
