Grand Central Atelier Patreon – Diana Buitrago Van Dyck Eye

Diana will be discussing Form, Value and Structure through a live painting demo. She will be simplifying these concepts throughout a step-by-step live master-copy demonstration. To distill these concepts in a workable amount of time Diana will focus on copying an eye from Van Dyke’s Portrait of Cornelis van der Geest and talking about the process as she paints.

Diana Buitrago (b. 1986) is a highly accomplished portrait and landscape painter from Colombia, living and working in New York City and Jersey City, and teaching at the GCA.

Her extensive formal artistic training in the classical atelier method includes the four year program at the Art Students League, Artistic Anatomy coursework at Drexel University’s School of Medicine, and the four year Core Program at the Grand Central Atelier. She has studied under artists Michael Grimaldi, Dan Thompson, Jon deMartin, Jacob Collins, and Colleen Barry. Diana’s work has been widely recognized for its excellence. She is a two-time Hudson River Fellow, an alumnus of the Château de La Napoule Residency, and has won prizes from the GCA, the ASL, and the Portrait Society of America. She is currently an instructor at the GCA.

“My work can be categorized under the tradition of the Classical Realism, my main goals is to understand the complexity of drawing and painting of the human form as I strive to hold up the standard of excellent draftsmanship of the Renaissance, Baroque and XIX Century art. As I advance my career, I aim to continue working under the tradition of the Old Masters while bringing my work to a contemporary reality. The study of nature is what keeps guiding my inspiration and sensibility. I will continue to work from life to capture moments of truth and to draw viewers in with their empathy.”
