Part 1: The Great Adventure
Born into a world of privilege in an America on the brink of global expansion, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt fights to make his mark in the world. He lived through the Gilded Age, replete with its extremes of wealth and poverty. But in his childhood Roosevelt was a sickly youngster struggling to fight his way through illness. As Roosevelt came of age, the U.S. was a land without safety nets, minimum wages, or social security. He entered the realm of public service as a man of privilege, but had with him his father’s lessons of a sense of duty that public servants should bring to their office. As Roosevelt began understanding the significant class differences in America, he was deeply moved and motivated. And at age 42, fate intervenes to propel him toward his greatest adventure.
Part 2: The Man in the Arena
William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, is shot to death at the 1901 World’s Fair on Buffalo, New York. After the assassination, Roosevelt takes the reins during one of the most turbulent periods in history. Roosevelt assumes the presidency with a philosophy of having those in power play by the rules. Relentless and compassionate, his determination to fight for the working man reshapes the political landscape. Roosevelt is busting trusts, and is extending the imperial ambitions of the United States with the Panama Canal, negotiating his own assertion of power. In March 4, 1909 he leaves the office, still only fifty years old, with his future reputation secure as one of our greatest presidents.
