English | Documentary | Size: 1.38 GB
What’s Behind Room 237? This is the award winning documentary, exploring the numerous hidden meanings discovered within Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, ‘THE SHINING’. Kubrick’s classic film gets a riveting and in-depth exploration of its hidden meanings, dazzling puzzles and even conspiracy theories.
Room 237 uncovers a guided tour of recurring symbols scattered throughout the master filmmaker’s work and a study on the nature of human obsession. Various analysts get a chance to speak, including a journalist, a film archivist, a historian and a filmmaker. Their voice-overs accompany footage from and other works by Kubrick.
The film is an inquiry in nine parts into Kubrick’s classic. It explores the symbolism of everything from tins of baking powder in the background to subliminal messages in cloud formations. Is it about the Holocaust, is it about the slaughter of Native Americans by white colonists, or is it Kubrick’s confession about his part in NASA’s staging of the landing on the moon? By charting and guiding us into Kubrick’s labyrinth, the film brings the viewer into a new labyrinth, one with an endless number of false turns and dead ends. Equal parts illuminating, mind-bending, eerie and oddly comic, Room 237 draws us into a new maze, one with endless detours and dead ends… many ways in, but no way out.
After the box office failure of Barry Lyndon, Stanley Kubrick decided to embark on a project that might have more commercial appeal. The Shining, Stephen King’s biggest critical and commercial success yet, seemed like a perfect vehicle. After an arduous production, Kubrick’s film received a wide release in the summer of 1980; the reviews were mixed, but the box office, after a slow start, eventually picked up. End of story? Hardly. In the 30 years since the film’s release, a considerable cult of Shining devotees has emerged, fans who claim to have decoded the film’s secret messages addressing everything from the genocide of Native Americans to a range of government conspiracies.
ROOM 237 is an exploration into the numerous theories regarding the subtexts within Kubrick’s phenomenal horror movie. The original film may be over 30 years old, but it continues to inspire debate, speculation and mystery. It is left up to the viewer to decide which of the observations, hidden messages and far-reaching theories stand up to closer inspection.
The title of Room 237 refers to the secret dream room in Kubrick’s film. It is an ode to the masterpiece, to the creative interpretation of imagery and to the pleasure of watching. Wry and provocative Room 237 fuses fact and fiction through interviews with cultists and scholars, creating a kaleidoscopic deconstruction of Kubrick’s still-controversial classic.
