UE4 is one of the most power engines in the video game industry. It has been used to create titles like Gears of Wars, Batman, or Final Fantasy. We will begin our series of tutorials on Unreal Engine starting with the basics of the software, how to install UE4 on our machine, a tour of the interface and viewport navigation, how to place and transform objects in our game, and how to use the content browser.
Hello everyone, I’m Hassem Samaali, an Unreal Engine instructor, and an environmental artist working for movies and video games.
Designed primarily for video games, UE4 has recently been used for the creation of architectural environments and show reels.
In this first episode of a long series of tutorials we will start with the basics of the engine, browsing the tools that will help us later to create 2D / 3D games and kinematics.
We will start with how to download and install UE4 on our machines by choosing the version we are going to use, which will allow us to move forward into the launcher of EPIC Games.
Unreal engine offers several templates for the creation of a project so let’s go through them together:
– First person shooter
– Flying game
– Virtual reality game
These templates offer animated characters, mechanics, assets and a demo level.
Once we’ve chosen our project type, we will take a tour of the interface to know where the different windows are and the utility of each of them:
– Modes
– Viewport
– Toolbar
– Content browser
– World outliner
– Details
Once familiar with the interface, we’ll explore the viewport and begin to move around our scene.
We will then start placing objects in the level and learn about transformation tools (translation, rotation, and scale) that will be imperative to 3D or 2D creation.
To end this tutorial and prepare for the next episode we will explore the options of the content browser, knowing that we must import and export our own assets soon.
I hope you will like this tutorial. We will meet soon for other more advanced courses to create your own games and cinematics in UE4.
