It’s the spot in the Caribbean where the Old World first met the New. In 1494, Christopher Columbus made a second journey to the Americas–this time with more ships, more men, and a grander mission. His goal: to build the first European colony in the New World.
But in just a few short years, this settlement would perish–one-fifth of its inhabitants dead, at least six ships sunk in the bay, and the legacy of Columbus permanently marred. What happened at this ill-fated settlement remains a mystery 500 years later.
In 1493, Christopher Columbus’s second trip to America took him back to the island of Hispaniola, which he had discovered. But instead of the improvised camp of Fort La Navidad, Columbus found a scene of devastation. He looked for a new location for the planned trading post. He found one east of La Navidad. But in 1495, a hurricane devastated the colony of La Isabela. When no gold was found, the colony was abandoned in 1497.
Now, National Geographic joins teams of archaeologists as they journey to uncover new evidence of the failure of America’s first European city, La Isabela.
