PBS – China: A Century of Revolution (1997) Part 3: Born Under The Red Flag

No country on earth has a longer, or more fascinating history than China. Towards the end of the 20th Century, director Sue Williams made three documentaries about China. These films were made before China had become known as an economic behemoth.
During the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, the West was both fearful of and curious about the cloistered Communist countries of Eastern Europe and Asia. Writer/Director Sue Williams and chief producer Kathryn Pierce-Dietz clearly seized on a rare opportunity to track down and interview as many participants of the country’s major historical events before time eventually claimed their lives – a loss that would’ve robbed history of their anecdotes and testimonies of personal experiences of the country’s civil war between nationalist and communist forces, war with the invading Japanese, and an ongoing war with ideologues struggling to modernize every corner of the country in spite of the glaring contradiction between a steeped communist society dabbling in western capitalism.
China: A Century of Revolution covers much of China during the 20th Century, beginning with the overthrowing of the Qing Dynasty by Sun Yat-sen’s revolutionary forces around 1911 and ending during the mid-1990s when rapid economic development introduced de-stabilizaing elements into society.

Part 3: Born under the Red Flag (1976-1997)
Born Under the Red Flag begins with Mao’s death in 1976, continues with the new leadership of Deng Xiaoping, and concludes with the struggle of China’s paradoxical goals of economic prosperity and absolute Communist Party control. In the short span of 15 years, China transformed itself into a never-before-seen hybrid of communism and capitalism. And although it has become the third largest economy in the world, the price has been high. Rare interviews and film footage highlight the Democracy Wall Movement, the establishment of Special Economic Zones and the dramatic student protests in Tiananmen Square.
