RMC – Philae: The Last Temples of Ancient Egypt (2023)
English | Documentary | Size: 1.28 GB
The island of Philae is one of the largest sites of ancient Egypt and was discovered by European explorers in the 18th century.
Located in Aswan in southern Egypt, Philae impresses with its magnificence. This sanctuary, dedicated to the goddess Isis, (goddess of motherhood, love, and resurrection) is the masterpiece of the last pharaohs of Egypt and the Roman emperors who succeeded them.
Today the temples of Philae stand out as one of the most iconic attractions of the Ptolemaic era, and the Roman emperors who ruled the region until the 7th century AD. The buildings, constructed centuries apart, make Philae an extraordinary site. The complex and elaborate architectural details, typical of Greco-Roman buildings, are interwoven with the Egyptian structures.
Even in ancient times, Philae was an important place of worship and pilgrimage, and the last stronghold of the ancient Egyptian religion. Due to its imposing temple complexes and picturesque location on the Nile, the island has impressed European travelers over the centuries. Among them was the French author Pierre Loti, who called the complex the "Pearl of Egypt." The island was approximately 460 meters long and 150 meters wide, covered with numerous palm trees and shrubs, and surrounded by the waters of the Nile. It represented a colorful natural and cultural ensemble with its rock formations in the middle of the Nubian Desert.
The ancient sanctuary no longer stands in its original site. Located now on the island of Aguilkia, the sanctuary was initially on the island of Philae, which is now underwater. Like Abu Simbel, Philae was the subject of an unusual and titanic archaeological rescue operation: dismantled piece by piece and rebuilt exactly as it was before on another island. Due to rising water levels caused by dam projects, it had to be salvaged in a multi-year rescue operation supported by UNESCO and rebuilt in its original state 600 meters away on a neighboring island of Agilkia. The world’s top scientists, architects, and Egyptologists embarked on the titanic task, with more than 40,000 stone blocks were dismantled one by one and then reassembled to save this jewel of ancient Egypt. One of the most expensive archaeological projects of its kind ever.
This documentary offers the first detailed insight into the fascinating history of the sunken temple sanctuary from the time of Cleopatra’s dynasty, from its origins through its heyday to the present day. The film crew gained access to unique archives and met with researchers and former excavation staff. An international team of researchers participates in unraveling the previously unsolved mysteries and secrets that still surround Philae.
Saved from the waters, the site of Philae is now a must-see for tourists from around the world. It remains a fascinating field of study for specialists in ancient Egypt, who continue to uncover its secrets.
