RTE – Back to Barrytown (2021)

Tells the story of Roddy Doyle’s much-loved Barrytown trilogy and meets the cast and crew from the films. Narrated by Colm Meaney.

Chapter 1: The Commitments (1991)
Explores the story behind Roddy Doyle’s self published book that brought Hollywood to town and created a cultural phenomenon! Through interviews with cast, crew and Roddy himself, Colm takes us on an nostalgic journey around a film that still holds a key place in the hearts of Irish people 30 years after its release.

Chapter 2: The Snapper (1993)
We discover the stories behind the memorable characters of Georgie Burgess and Sharon Curley and how they were brought to our screens. Whilst revisiting the making of the film, we also explore the suburb of Kilbarrack, a place synonymous with the world of Barrytown, where we learn the human stories of the locals and why the film still endures both there and beyond.

Chapter 3: The Van (1996)
Colm Meaney returns to explore the world of ‘The Van’. It’s 1995, the hottest summer on record, and cast and crew have returned to Kilbarrack to make another movie. With contributions from Stephen Frears, Brendan O’Carroll, Neil? Conroy, Ger Ryan and more, we learn the story behind The Van and meet the locals who both took part in the film and could relate to the themes being portrayed by its main characters.and of course, we get to relive the magical time of Italia 90 when we all chanted about being part of Jackie’s army.
