A penetration tester or ethical hacker is a type of security consultant that tries to find and exploit vulnerabilities/misconfigurations in order to break into computer systems and software. They then document the identified security issues and prioritize the order with which they should be fixed along with providing detailed explanations of how to fix these identified security issues.
Pentest Candidate Program
Penetration Tester Job Description
As a penetration tester you may be expected to conduct formal tests on wired/wireless networks, web/mobile applications, client-server applications, databases and hardware. Each of these areas is different, and many people choose to specialize in only one or two of them.
Penetration Tester Job Duties List
Specific job duties often include but are not limited to:
Open Source Intelligence gathering against a person or company
Attack surface mapping
Vulnerability identification
Vulnerability exploitation
Documentation of the identified security issues
Assigning a criticality rating to the identified security issues
Documenting the recommended remediation for each security issue
Why is it so difficult to become a penetration tester?
There are a lot of reasons why it is difficult to become a penetration tester. The primary reason is simply because most people don’t have the background to perform the required tasks. A typical penetration test is 1 week in length and you may be assessing the security of several hundred computers, or you may be assessing the security of a web application developed in a new technology.
You may have to explain to a database administrator how he has misconfigured Oracle and that allowed you to break into the database. You may have to explain to a network administrator how he misconfigured a switch and that allowed you sniff the network traffic in the environment. You may have to explain to a developer how he wrote a component of the application incorrectly and that is what allowed you to break into the application.
You will need to be at least a peer in understanding of whatever you are testing to the person that is going to be fixing the security issues you identify. If the customer doesn’t view you as at least a peer you may have a very difficult time as a penetration tester.
How can Strategic Security help you become a Penetration Tester?
