Light is being shed on the harsh truths of Europe’s most dramatic expansion from 1492 after Colombus landed in the Caribbean. “Conquistadors: The Rise and Fall” is a gripping documentary series that delves into the fascinating and murky story of the Spanish Empire’s conquest of the New World. The series takes an unprecedented look into the brutal legend of the Spanish Conquistadors and uncovers the truth of this dark chapter in human history. We delve deeper into the Spanish Empire’s conquests over the Aztec and Inca and their search for vast treasures and fabled golden cities.
Beginning with the accidental discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus which ignited an era of exploration for the Spanish empire and marked a turning point in world history. Upon Columbus’ return voyage to the Americas, he discovers that the Spanish left behind at Hispaniola had been killed by the indigenous Taino, sparking a brutal chain of colonisation throughout the Caribbean. What follows is the ruthless ambition of Hernan Cortes, who travelled deep into the Mexican interior to conquer one of the great empires in the Americas: the Aztecs. His victory cemented the subjugation and submersion of indigenous populations.
Following Cortes’ success, the series explores the conquest of the largest civilization in the Americas: the Incas, led by the Conquistador Francisco Pizarro. As Spanish colonies continued to grow throughout the Americas, the Spanish monarchy struggled to control the guardians of “New Spain” from afar. The discovery of a vast silver mine in Bolivia provided unlimited wealth, but also heightened tensions with the Conquistadors growing in strength and ambivalence to the Spanish monarchy.
Finally, the series examines the creation of the “Black Legend” and the fall of the Conquistadors as other European rulers propagated an anti-Spanish narrative due to Spain’s wealth and violent practices in the Americas. The end of the era of Conquistadors was heralded, and millions of lives were obliterated for what would be the birth of a New World.

Part 6: The Black Legend

The twentieth century bore witness to some of the most devastating naval battles in history. Hundreds of thousands of men and women served in some of the largest armadas ever assembled, as, from the Arctic Sea to the South Pacific, colossal battleships met in desperate conflict alongside aircraft carriers, submarines and destroyers. These warships symbolised a nation’s power on the world stage. With each generation, they grew more powerful and advanced. These were machines of war that inspired both awe and terror.
But many of these ocean titans did not survive. Naval warfare was always evolving, and what was once groundbreaking was soon obsolete. Ships were destroyed by gunfire, torpedoes, and bombs, often with catastrophic loss of life.

Part 1: Scharnhorst: Hitler’s Lucky Ship
In a short but dramatic career the Nazi battleship Scharnhorst became one of the most feared warships of the Second World War. She sank the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and became the scourge of Allied Convoys in the North Atlantic. Then, when under threat of destruction, Scharnhorst escaped back to Germany through the English Channel in one of the most audacious naval operations in the entire war. But her luck would finally run out in the freezing waters of the Arctic, in a deadly battle with the British battleship Duke of York.

CNN Original Series “Secrets & Spies: A Nuclear Game” tracks the spies operating behind the scenes in the 1980s as the Cold War brings two superpowers to the brink of nuclear war.
In the 1980s, the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. pushed the world to the brink of global disaster as each nation rushed to build up its nuclear arsenal. As that was going on, each nation felt the acute need to spy on the other.
This razor-sharp series examines the tenuousness of global geopolitics during the Cold War through the lens of two notorious double agents: Oleg Gordievsky and Aldrich Ames. While the world was on the brink of global disaster, history was being made in the shadows. As President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher maneuver on the world stage to try to resolve the Cold War, it is in fact their agents that are pulling the strings.
“There’s a mole somewhere!” Gordievsky, the top KGB double agent for the British, proves invaluable by giving insight into the Soviet mindset. In the West, Aldrich is the head of the Soviet Desk for the CIA when he decides to turn traitor and work for the KGB. As the spy wars heat up in the shadows, they threaten to destabilize diplomatic efforts. The betrayals deepen, lives are lost, and some spies must embark on a daring escape.
“Secrets & Spies: A Nuclear Game” includes rare archival interviews and never-before-heard audio from double agents Gordievsky and Ames, as well as interviews with former CIA, FBI, MI6, MI5, KGB officers and former aides to Prime Minister Thatcher & President Reagan.

Part 3: Escape
Spy work appears to bring East and West closer, but the web they weave is about to close in and jeopardize the spies themselves.
Battles between Cold War spies leads to danger, betrayal and high-risk stakes; as Reagan and Gorbachev take their first steps towards peace, the double agent spies begin to unravel the entire secret service networks.
It’s 1985, and Mikhail Gorbachev is the new, young leader of the Soviet Union at a very tense time. While both sides have hopes of peace, they have been publicly stockpiling nuclear weapons for decades. Neither side wants to appear weak. Thatcher and Reagan hope that fresh leadership in the Kremlin will offer an opportunity for constructive dialogue.
Top double agent Oleg Gordievsky is pivotal in these negotiations, but a sudden summons back to Moscow by his KGB bosses has unnerved him – do they know he is secretly spying for Britain? When he arrives at his Moscow flat and discovers that a lock which he never turns has been used, his fears are confirmed.
