If you are looking to build scalable web services or clients on the JVM then Ktor is for you. Written in Kotlin, this is an extensible, lightweight framework that uses coroutines to provide an easy to test and easy use asynchronous programming model.
Many web applications and services are built using the Spring Framework. While Spring is incredibly powerful and useful nobody can accuse it of being lightweight. Many developers look for something that ‘just works’, that does not have too much overhead. In this course, Building Web Applications in Kotlin Using Ktor, you will learn about the framework that more and more JVM developers are looking at as a programming language because of the benefits it has such as support of immutable data and null detection, as well as having less of the bloat of Java. Bring these two together, a lightweight HTTP framework and a nice programming language and you get Ktor. First, you will explore Ktor – an open source project developed by JetBrains, the creators of Kotlin. It is heavily based on Kotlin coroutines and so supports a high degree of asynchrony. Next, you will discover how you can use Ktor to develop both REST and HTML based web sites that are secure and extensible. Finally, you will gain an understanding of how to produce complex server-based applications or standalone HTTP client applications. When you are finished with this course, you will know how to create web applications and REST APIs in Ktor. [Read more…]

Now that Kotlin is the preferred language of Android developers, what is the best library to work with SQLite databases using Kotlin? Room just released support for Kotlin Coroutines, and SqlDelight released support for Kotlin Multiplatform. Room has great documentation and hides a lot of implementation detail, while SqlDelight lets you write raw SQL statements with an Android Studio plugin and then generates type-safe code for you. In this session, you’ll see a rundown of these two libraries, along with live coding demos to help you decide which library sounds right for you in this Kotlin world. [Read more…]

After this course, you’ll be able to confidently use Kotlin for any kind of project — but we’ll of course apply what we learn to Android app development in this course.

Kotlin is a modern language for the JVM, and the only officially supported language on Android besides Java. It’s developed by JetBrains, the makers of IntelliJ on which Android Studio is based. Since Google’s announcement to officially support Kotlin in 2017, interest in the language has radically increased — and with it the number of tutorials, courses, books, and also job offers for Kotlin. It’s a great time to dive into this modern language and get ahead of other Android developers! With its modern language design that incorporates industry best practices, Kotlin allows you to write highly expressive, understandable and safe code — while being 100% interoperable with Java. You can use any Java classes and methods from Kotlin and the other way around. This course shows you what language features I mean, and how you can apply them in order to write world-class code. Learn to use Kotlin the right way to actually improve your Android app code write null-safe, concise, and readable code in Kotlin using functional and object-oriented concepts workaround unnecessary boilerplate code when using Android APIs (e.g. SQLite) using higher-order extension functions, use Android Studio effectively to speed up your development workflow, get your questions answered along the way should you ever get stuck.
