Underpaint Academy – Mechs, Vehicles, & Props with Alex Konstad

In this 8-week class, Alex Konstad will give you the tools to be able to construct your own believable hard surface designs. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the restrictive nature of drawing functional mechanical objects, this class will unlock your creativity!

We’ll cover:
• Alex’s Thought Process
• Hard Surface Design
• Form and Function
• Drawing, Painting & Rendering techniques

Week 1: Intro to Hard Surface Design – sketching from mechanical reference – hard surface foundations
Week 2: Mecha Design Fundamentals: joints, mechanics, function
Week 3: Mecha Design – Purpose and utility, lecture (form follows function – how to design with purpose)
Week 4: Mecha Details – Lecture: Scale, Details and adding Complexity
Week 5: Vehicle Design fundamentals – Lecture: design principles for vehicles
Week 6: Vehicle Design with function – Lecture: Utilizing reference to design vehicles for specific functions
Week 7: Hard surface prop designs – Lecture: How to design engaging hard surface props for animation and games
Week 8: Lecture: Painting and rendering techniques for Hard Surface – packeting a design for final presentation

Duration: 8 weeks
Date & Time: Starts Sunday October 6th, every Sunday at 5:00 PM eastern
Skill level: All skill levels welcome
Tiers: Receive direct feedback in class or spectate without homework feedback.
Format: 4-5 hour live class with combination of lectures, demos, and feedback. Recordings will usually be provided within 24 hours of each class.
Materials: Any digital or traditional tools. Paintovers will be done digitally

Class will be a combination of lecture, demos and feedback.
